Looking for an open space to enjoy the splendid view of the mighty Brahmaputra? The Sati Radhika Shanti Udyan, also called Sati Radhika Prashanti Udyan, is the perfect place for you. Whether you want a relaxing time with your friends or family or want to experience the mesmerizing sunset view, the park is a must-visit.
Inaugurated on Nov 7, 2025, under the Guwahati Smart City initiative, the project reflects the city’s modern vision, and it transformed the southern riverbank of the Brahmaputra into a lively public and recreational space.
The park represents a contemporary infrastructure with natural riverside charm offering visitors a refreshing escape in the town while enhancing Guwahati’s tourism appeal.
Stretching from Kachari Ghat, Uzanbazar, towards the New DC Bungalow, the 1.2 km long and 15 meters wide riverfront park introduces well-planned promenades, cycle tracks, landscaped green zones, seating areas, and decorative lighting that enhance the riverside experience.
Sati Radhika Prashanti Udyan is well equipped with open gyms, cultural zones, Assam-style huts, and modern river terminals, making it a multifunctional destination for both residents and visitors. One of the key objectives of the New Brahmaputra Riverfront Park was to create accessible public spaces that encourage outdoor recreation, fitness, and community interaction.
Beyond recreation, the Sati Radhika Shanti Udyan plays a vital role in promoting ecotourism and cultural tourism. Cultural exhibits and activity zones highlight Assam’s heritage while supporting local livelihoods.
Sati Radhika, a scholar from the Kaivarta community who lived during medieval Assam, was a follower of Vaishnavite saint-reformer Srimanta Sankardev.
The Kaivarta people were traditionally fisherfolk and cultivators, occupying a modest position in the social hierarchy of the time, which makes Sati Radhika's story all the more remarkable.
She is remembered not for royal lineage or scholarly achievement but for an act of profound selflessness: when the stream flowing from 'Tembuwani Jan' repeatedly flooded Barpeta, inundating homes and destroying livelihoods with each monsoon, it was Sati Radhika who took it upon herself to construct an embankment to protect the community. This was not the work of kings or administrators—it was the quiet courage of an ordinary woman who chose her people's safety first.
For this act, as per local beliefs, she was honored with the title Shantikanya—literally "Daughter of Peace." The name captures something essential about Assamese cultural memory: that peace is not merely the absence of war but the presence of protection, care, and harmony between people and their environment.
For the people of Assam, the Brahmaputra has never been just a river. It floods, it nourishes, it destroys, and it restores—often in the same season. Living beside it has always demanded both courage and humility.
When Sati Radhika built an embankment to protect her community from its floods, she was doing something that went beyond construction. She was choosing her neighbors over her own comfort at a time when nobody asked her to.
That act of quiet courage is what the name Shaanti Udyan—The Garden of Peace—means. Peace, in the Assamese sense, is not simply the absence of conflict. It is what happens when someone steps forward to protect the people around them. Sati Radhika did exactly that, and to remember her courage and sacrifice, the park is named Sati Radhika Shanti Udyan.
So when you walk through this park and watch the Brahmaputra from the promenade, the name on the gate means something. The river in front of you is the same one Sati Radhika once worked to tame.
The park, in that sense, is an invitation. Not just to enjoy the river, but to understand the older Assam that lived beside it long before the city was built.
