Jatinga is one of Haflong's most popular bird-watching areas, overseen by the district forest office. Tourists visiting Assam, or more specifically Silchar, should not miss this sight, which is noted for its "bird suicide" phenomenon. You will be captivated by the quiet and serene village of Jatinga, which is located approximately 9 kilometers south of Haflong.
This picturesque village has gained renown for its spectacular views as well as the mysterious phenomenon of birds "committing suicide." It has been hypothesized that due to Jatinga's unique geography, these birds are drawn to the lights originating from the houses at night, fly down to the vicinity of these lights, and are then murdered by the residents. Regardless of the exact origin of the problem, bird slaughter has been prohibited, allowing bird lovers to enjoy birdwatching in all its grandeur.
The Jatinga Bird Observatory, located around 57 kilometers outside the city, is a scenic place worth visiting, especially between November and February. During these months, it attracts a wide variety of bird species, both local and migratory, including pond herons, black bitterns, kingfishers, and tiger bitterns. This well-known location is famous for its picturesque splendor, especially during the winter season, and provides breathtaking views of the Assamese mountain ranges.
One of the most enriching elements of visiting Jatinga is being able to experience the traditional lifestyle of the Dimasa tribe, one of Assam's indigenous populations. The Dimasas have a strong connection to nature, and their culture combines oral traditions, folk music, craftsmanship, and ecological living. You receive more than just a tourist experience when you make a real connection with a distinct community and obtain a better understanding of Assam's rich cultural tapestry.
Haflong Lake, located about 6 kilometers south of Jatinga, provides a tranquil setting for self-reflection and magnificent views. It stands out among Assam's gorgeous lakes, known for its popularity and diverse range of outdoor activities. Visitors can enjoy day-long picnics, participate in water sports, and go boating. Anglers will find possibilities to fish, providing a peaceful lakeside experience. The lake, which features a Hanging Bridge Overpass, is a popular tourist destination in the region.
