This temple, which attracts followers from all over India, has a history dating back to the time of the Puranas. According to legend, Banasura, the demon king whose capital was Tezpur, was
the first to introduce 'Linga' worship. Inside the Mahabhairab temple is maybe the world's largest stone-phallus or Shiva Linga, which is supposed to have been built by Banasura. Archaeologists think the temple was built by Salasthamba dynasty kings between the 8th and 10th centuries AD. The massive pillars spread all around the temple indicate that it was formerly a stone temple. But the old temple was destroyed by the passage of time. It was, however, rebuilt by successive kings and rulers, until it was heavily damaged by the catastrophic earthquake of 1897.
