Maibang is a small hill town on the Mahur River in Dima Hasao, and from the 16th to the 18th century it was the capital of the Dimasa Kachari kingdom. This one-day tour reads that history through three stops: the monolithic Stone House beside the river, the Dimasa Heritage Museum, and the Maibang Road Tunnel on NH 27.
You begin at the Stone House, a rock-cut temple the Dimasa call Longthai ni Noh, dedicated to Ranachandi, the presiding goddess of the Dimasa kings. Give the morning to it: the carved stone, the temple park, and the river behind it. From there you move indoors to the museum in Kashmaipur, set up as a heritage museum and research center, to place what you have just seen in the wider story of the Dimasa people.
Length and pace: about 7 to 8 hours, including lunch, mostly by vehicle, with short walks at the first two stops. Easy fitness level.
A living place of worship: the Stone House is a temple, so expect worshippers, offerings, and a request to dress modestly and remove footwear.
A museum that is small and local: treat it as a focused stop on Dimasa heritage, not a large state museum.
The tunnel is seen from your vehicle: it is a working stretch of NH 27, and it is in poor repair (see the travel advisory), so there is no walking inside.
Season: October to March is the best window. Heavy monsoon rain can close roads, and the tunnel was blocked by siltation in May 2022.
Getting there: Maibang has its own railway station and sits on NH 27, about 50 km from Haflong. A tour that starts in Guwahati needs an overnight in Maibang or Haflong, so the sightseeing day starts fresh.

Inclusions
Exclusions
Treat the tunnel with caution. Reports from March 2026 describe large craters, a badly damaged road surface, and poor lighting inside it. Go only in daylight, stay in your vehicle, never stop or walk inside, and take photos only from a safe spot outside the portal. Ask your driver for the latest condition on the day.
Check road and weather status before you set out. NH 27 in Dima Hasao has been cut by landslides and flooding in past monsoons. Avoid the rainy season, and confirm the road is open the evening before.
Respect the Stone House as a place of worship. Dress modestly, ask before photographing worshippers or rituals, and follow the guidance of temple caretakers on footwear.
Plan for limited facilities. Maibang has only a few hotels, and Haflong has the better choice of stays. Carry cash, water, snacks, and a power bank, and download offline maps because mobile coverage can be patchy in the hills.
Travel in daylight and check for local advisories. Dima Hasao has a history of unrest, so ask your hotel or the district administration about current conditions, keep to the plan, and be back at your hotel before dusk.
