Assam is not just an Indian state but a global landmark for heritage tourism. There are 3 UNESCO-recognized world heritage sites in Assam that reflect the vibrant culture and rich diversity of Assam.
1 Kaziranga National Park
The most iconic tourist site in Assam, covering an area of 1,090 sq. km of Golaghat, Nagaon, and Karbi Anglong. Originally designated as a reserve forest in 1908, it became a national park in 1974.
It is mainly famous for the one-horned Rhinoceros. Additionally, it is home to elephants, tigers, buffaloes, deer, and various plant and animal species, making it a major tourist attraction.
This park is known for its rich biodiversity, hosting unique ecosystems that support many exclusive species. Recognizing its importance, UNESCO granted it World Heritage Site status in 1985.
2 Manas National Park
Located in the Himalayan foothills, the park covers around 850 sq. km in the Chirang and Baksa districts of Assam. It was declared a sanctuary in 1928 and later recognized as a national park in 1990.
It is home to rare and endangered wildlife, including the world's only known Pygmy Hog. In 1985, UNESCO recognized it as a World Heritage Site for its unique biodiversity.
Manas National Park is a heavenly home for wildlife and a designated biosphere reserve. It is particularly famous for its population of wild water buffaloes.
3 Charaideo Maidam
Charaideo Maidam, often called the 'Pyramids of Assam,' is located in the Charaideo district. It served as the royal burial ground for the Ahom dynasty, where the first Ahom king, Sukaphaa, established his capital in 1253 CE.
With over 150 maidams, Charaideo stands as a symbolic center of Assam's 600-year Ahom rule. It reflects a unique Tai-Ahom culture and architecture blend, showcasing the dynasty's rich heritage.
On 26 July 2024, UNESCO declared Charaideo Maidam a World Heritage Site, putting Assam on the global map for its archaeological wonder, aiming to highlight its cultural and historical significance.
